See income vs expenses over time
On this page
A cash flow report shows how much money came into a ledger, how much went out, and the difference, period by period. Ask your AI for one to see whether a ledger, or all of them together, is keeping money or spending it. For other kinds of reports, see get any report by asking your AI.
How to do it
- Name the ledger, or ask for all your ledgers combined. If you don't name one, the report covers the ledger you're working in.
- Say which dates, such as "last month" or "the last three months".
- Say how to break it down: by day, week, month, quarter or year. Month is the default.

What you'll see
Your AI lists each period with its money in, money out and net, plus totals for the whole range. A period with no transactions has no entry.
For the first prompt, your AI shows Studio's two most recent months with $2,400 in and $379.99 out, a net of $2,020.01 each. The second and third prompts name no ledger, so they cover the ledger you're working in. The fourth adds up every ledger.
If a period mixes currencies, such as dollars and the euros from a trip, that period shows each currency on its own and has no combined figure. For one ledger, the totals work the same way. For all your ledgers combined, the totals are converted to your display currency at the latest daily exchange rate, with the rate's date, and the periods still show each currency on its own. If no rate from the last 7 days is available, the totals stay one per currency. See multiple currencies.
Good to know
- All your ledgers together. A combined report covers every ledger in your workspace except demo ledgers. While a demo ledger is the one you're working in, it covers only that demo. See workspaces and ledgers and totals look wrong.
- Money in and out is decided by sign. Anything that adds money to an account counts as money in, and anything that takes money out counts as money out. An unmatched refund, or a partly matched one, shows as money in rather than lowering an expense. A full refund matched to its purchase leaves both out. See match a refund to its purchase.
- Transfers are left out. A transaction is left out when it's linked as a transfer or its category is Transfer. A move between two of your accounts that isn't linked or categorized as a transfer still counts. If both accounts are in the same ledger, it shows once as money out and once as money in. See link the two sides of a transfer.
- Split pieces count in their own ledger when you name it. A piece of a split assigned to another ledger counts in that ledger's report when you name that ledger. Without a ledger name, each transaction counts whole. See split one charge across categories.
- Weeks run Monday to Sunday in your AI's report.
On the web
The web app has a Cash flow page under Reports. It covers the ledger selected in the app and breaks the range down by week only. Pick a range from Last 7, 30 or 90 days, This month, Last month, Year to date, Last year or All time. The page shows money in, money out, net, and Kept, which is the net as a share of money in. Below them are a weekly chart and a week-by-week table.
- The page's weeks are 7-day blocks counted back from the newest transaction in the range, so they can differ from your AI's Monday-to-Sunday weeks.
- The weekly chart and table show up to 26 weeks. The totals at the top cover the whole range.
- Transactions in another currency are left out of the page's totals, and a note names those currencies.
