What’s an MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s the open standard AI assistants — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and others — use to connect to outside tools and data.
Pennyweight uses MCP to give your AI access to your financial data. You don’t need to understand the protocol. You paste one link into your AI, authorize the connection, then link your bank accounts and tag which ones belong to which entity. Your AI never holds your encryption keys — it gets an opaque token, and our server decrypts on-demand for the tool calls you ask for.
From connector to first answer.
- 1In Claude on the web or desktop, go to Customize → Connectors and click + → Add custom connector.
- 2Name it “Pennyweight” and paste the server URL: https://mcp.pennyweight.ai. Click Add, then Connect.
- 3Authorize with Pennyweight: sign in, complete two-factor, and enter your passphrase. That handshake binds the connector to your account.
- 4Setting up for the first time? You’ll create a passphrase — your browser derives your encryption key from it. Save the recovery code you are given: it is the only other way in.
- 5Link your bank through Plaid, then tag your accounts by entity — personal, business, property, or whatever fits your life. You can change this anytime.
- 6Done. Ask Claude: “Show me my freelance expenses this month.”
Five steps to your first answer.
- 1Use ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com) — custom plugins aren’t in the mobile or desktop apps.
- 2Open Settings → Plugins → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode. It’s labeled beta — that’s expected.
- 3In Settings → Plugins, click + to create a plugin. Name it “Pennyweight,” keep Connection on Server URL, and paste: https://mcp.pennyweight.ai. Set Authentication to OAuth, tick the risk acknowledgement, and Create.
- 4Click “Sign in with Pennyweight,” then authorize: enter your passphrase on Pennyweight’s page. That binds the plugin to your account.
- 5In a new chat, ask: “Using Pennyweight, show me my account balances.”

US banks and credit unions supported by Plaid — over 10,000 of them. Outside the US, you can still use Pennyweight by adding accounts manually or having your AI read your statements.
Use your recovery code — setup gives you one, and it restores access. If you lose both the passphrase and the recovery code, no one can recover your data, including us. Save the recovery code somewhere safe.
