Split one charge across categories
On this page
When one charge covers different things, such as food and cleaning supplies from the same store, your AI can split it into pieces. Each piece gets its own amount and category, and category reports and budgets count each piece under its own category. To move a whole charge to one category instead, see change a transaction's category.
How to do it
- Tell your AI which charge you mean. A merchant name plus a date or an amount is usually enough.
- Say how to divide it: an amount and a category for each piece. "The rest" works for the last piece.
- Your AI saves the split. Pennyweight checks that the pieces add up to the charge.
- To undo it, ask your AI to remove the split. The charge goes back to one piece.
Split my Big Basket Superstore charge from last month: $100 for Groceries, the rest under Home.
Split my Big Basket Superstore charge from last month: $100 for Groceries, the rest under Home. Then show me last month's spending by category.
Split my Big Basket Superstore charge from last month into $100 Groceries and the rest Home, then remove the split so it's one charge again.
What you'll see
Your AI finds the $142.67 charge and confirms the two pieces: $100.00 under Groceries and $42.67 under Home. In the category breakdown, those two amounts count under Groceries and Home, and the charge no longer counts under Shopping. After you remove the split, the charge is one $142.67 piece again.
Good to know
- The pieces must add up exactly. If they don't match the charge to the cent, Pennyweight rejects the split and shows both amounts, so your AI can correct them.
- Pieces share the charge's currency. You can't split one charge into pieces in different currencies.
- Each piece has a reason. Your AI writes a short reason for every piece. Each one is kept on the transaction and the split is recorded in your audit trail.
- A new split replaces the old one. To change one piece, ask for the whole split again with the new amounts.
- A piece without a category stays in the charge's category.
- The charge keeps its own category. Splitting doesn't change it. A list of transactions by category looks at that main category only. Totals by category and category budgets count each piece under its own category. See get any report by asking your AI.
- The web app's category totals don't use pieces. They count the whole charge under its main category.
- A piece can go to another ledger. A cash flow report for that ledger counts the piece there. Other reports keep the whole charge in its own ledger. See track a trip's spending in its own ledger.
- Amount and currency are locked while split. To correct either, remove the split, make the fix, then split again. See correct a manual entry.
- Bank transactions can be split too. Their amount, date and currency stay locked, but a split works.
- Splitting doesn't track who owes you. If someone owes you part of a charge, see track money you lent or borrowed. See split a dinner bill and track who owes you.
