Moving from Empower
On this page
If you've been tracking your money in Empower Personal Dashboard, you can bring your transaction history into Pennyweight. You export a CSV from Empower, and your AI reads it and sends the rows to Pennyweight, one account at a time. New to importing? Start with how importing works.
Export from Empower
These steps are per Empower's help center, and its menus can change.
- On the web. From the Overview menu, select Transactions. Click the CSV button to the right of the transaction search field.
- Widen the date range first. The Transactions page shows 90 days by default. Pick a longer preset from the date pull-down, or type your own From and To dates.
- Choose the account types. Filter buttons at the top of the page show Cash, Investment, Credit, Loan or Mortgage transactions. The export holds what the date range and the account types you selected show. With a 90-day range and the Investment tab, for example, you get only the last 90 days of investment transactions.
- On iOS. Open the menu in the top left and select Transactions. Set the date range with the calendar icon, tap the down arrow in the top right, pick a sort order, tap Export and choose where to save the file. Per Empower, export isn't available on Android yet.
Empower holds only what it collected after you linked each account. Per Empower, when you first link an account it tries to retrieve 1 to 3 months of transactions, depending on the institution, and up to a year for some bank accounts. For older history, use your bank's own statements. See import a bank CSV.
How to do it
- Share the CSV with your AI and tell it which Pennyweight account each Empower account goes into. Each import goes into one account, so your AI sends one batch per account. To bring in only some accounts, say which.
- If an account doesn't exist in Pennyweight yet, ask your AI to add it. A new manual account needs an opening balance before its first import: the balance just before the first row. For a credit card, give what you owed as a positive number. See add a manual account.
- Your AI shows a preview for each account: new rows, likely duplicates, rows that need a look, and the account's balance after the import. Nothing is saved yet. Check that the balance moves the way you expect. See reading an import preview.
- Say yes to import, then work through after you import.
Here's my Empower transactions CSV. Import my checking account's rows into my Everyday Checking account and my credit card's rows into my Rewards Card account, keeping Empower's categories. Show me both previews, then ask me once before saving.
I'm moving from Empower. What can I bring over into Pennyweight: my transactions, and my investment holdings with each position and its share count? Just tell me, don't create, import or log anything.
What you'll see
For the first prompt, your AI reads the file, converts the dates to YYYY-MM-DD and signs each amount from the account's side. It shows one preview for Everyday Checking and one for Rewards Card, with the new rows, their categories and each account's balance after the import. After you say yes, it reports how many rows were saved in each account and any it skipped.
For the second, your AI tells you that your transactions can come over from a CSV and that holdings can't be imported. Nothing is created.
What carries over
Each row brings its date, amount, payee, category text, currency and notes. If one of your Pennyweight rules matches a row, the rule's category replaces Empower's when the import is saved, unless you ask your AI to import with rules turned off. Your investment holdings don't move, and neither do budgets or rules. See the full list of what doesn't move.
Good to know
- Your AI does the reading. Pennyweight has no Empower importer. It can also read a CSV uploaded straight to it, but that route doesn't split a file by account, and any date not written as YYYY-MM-DD needs your AI to name the date order. Your AI handles both when it reads the export.
- Check the signs. Pennyweight stores money out as negative and money in as positive. On a card, a charge is negative and a payment is positive. The balance in the preview shows whether your AI got the direction right.
- Holdings stay behind. Pennyweight has no way to import positions or share counts. It lists holdings only for a brokerage account you link, with investment details turned on in Settings. See investment holdings. To count an account's value without linking it, ask your AI to add a manual account with its current balance.
- Each category is a single label. Each Empower category arrives as one label. Your AI can map them onto the names you want before saving.
- Transfers appear in both accounts. A card payment from checking shows up on both sides. Import each side into its own account, then ask your AI to find the pairs and link them. See link transfers.
- Rules don't move. Ask your AI to recreate the rules you rely on. See rebuild your rules after moving.
