View investment holdings and gains
On this page
Link a US brokerage account and your AI can list each position you hold, what it's worth, and how much it has gained. This page shows how to turn that on and how to read the answer.
How to do it
- Link the brokerage. Your own holdings come only from an account linked through your bank connection. See connect a US bank or card.
- Turn on Investment details for that bank. In the web app, go to Settings → Accounts. Under the bank, find Details from your bank and switch on Investment details. This needs two-factor authentication. See turn on card, investment and recurring details.
- Ask your AI what you hold. It lists each position with its name or ticker, quantity, price and value, as your institution reports them.
- Ask about gains. Your AI can give the account's total value, cost basis and unrealized gain.
- Narrow it down if you like. Name one account, or one ledger, to get only those holdings.

What you'll see
Your AI lists the positions in each brokerage account, with the price date your institution reported. It adds a total value for the account, and the cost basis and unrealized gain where your institution reports a cost basis.
If some positions have no cost basis, the gain covers only the positions that do. Pennyweight tells your AI how many positions have a cost basis, so it can say how much of the account the gain covers.
In the web app, open the account from Settings → Accounts to see a From your bank card. It shows summary figures such as Total value, Holdings, Total cost basis and Unrealized gain. The list of individual positions is available through your AI only.
Good to know
- An empty list doesn't mean an empty account. If Investment details is off for that bank, or the data hasn't arrived yet, your AI gets no holdings for the account plus a note saying so. It should point you to the switch, not tell you that you hold nothing. My investment holdings list is empty covers this case.
- When holdings appear. They usually fill in right after you turn the switch on. If Plaid is still preparing the data, they appear after a later sync. After that, they refresh when your bank data syncs.
- The switch is one-way. Once Investment details is on for a bank, it stays on until you disconnect that bank.
- Values are a snapshot. Prices and values are the institution's figures as of the date it reports, not live quotes.
- Currencies stay separate. If an account holds positions in more than one currency, there is no single total. Your AI gets a separate total for each currency instead. Holdings values aren't converted: each position stays in its own currency.
- Manual accounts have no holdings. Pennyweight lists positions only for a linked brokerage. The one exception is a personal demo ledger: its sample Brokerage and 401(k) accounts come with fictional positions. See try Pennyweight with a demo ledger.
- Linking is US-only. Bank and brokerage linking works for US institutions only.
