Moving from Quicken Simplifi
On this page
If you've been budgeting in Quicken Simplifi, you can bring your transaction history into Pennyweight. You export a CSV from Simplifi, and your AI reads it and sends the rows to Pennyweight, one account at a time. New to importing? Start with how importing works.
Export from Simplifi
These steps are per Simplifi's help center, and its menus can change. Export works only in the Simplifi web app, and only as CSV. Per Simplifi, mobile export isn't available yet.
The export holds the transactions the Transactions view shows, so set your filters first.
- One account. Open Transactions and select the account. Apply any filters, open the three-dot menu beside Filter, and click the download arrow.
- Several accounts. Open Transactions and select Banking. Use Filter to choose the accounts, apply any other filters, then open the three-dot menu and choose Export to CSV.
- A date range. Click the calendar icon next to Filter, choose Custom, select a start and end date, then click Apply Dates.
- Split transactions. Per Simplifi, splits aren't exported by default. To include them, click the gear icon at the far right of the transaction columns and turn on Show split transactions, the last option. Each split then gets its own line.
Exporting one account at a time gives you one file per Pennyweight account.
How to do it
- Share the CSV with your AI and tell it which Pennyweight account it goes into. If one file covers several accounts, tell your AI which Pennyweight account each one maps to. It imports one batch per account.
- If an account doesn't exist in Pennyweight yet, ask your AI to add it. A new manual account needs an opening balance before its first import: the balance just before the first row. For a credit card, give what you owed as a positive number. See add a manual account.
- Decide how split charges come over. See the next section.
- Your AI shows a preview for each account: new rows, likely duplicates and rows that need a look, and the account's balance after the import. Nothing is saved yet. Check that the balance moves the way you expect. See reading an import preview.
- Say yes to import, then work through after you import.
Here's my Quicken Simplifi transactions export. Import my checking account's rows into my Everyday Checking account and my credit card's rows into my Rewards Card account, keeping Simplifi's categories. Show me both previews, then ask me once before saving.
Split charges
An import doesn't create Pennyweight splits. You have two ways to bring a split charge over.
- As separate rows. With Show split transactions on, each part comes over as its own row, with its own amount and category.
- As one split charge. Import the charge as a single row, then ask your AI to split it in Pennyweight. The parts must add up to the charge. See split a transaction.
Before you import, ask your AI whether any charge appears both whole and as its parts. Import one or the other, never both, or the balance counts the charge twice.
What you'll see
Your AI reads the file, converts the dates to YYYY-MM-DD and signs each amount from the account's side. It shows one preview for Everyday Checking and one for Rewards Card, with the new rows, their categories and each account's balance after the import. After you say yes, it reports how many rows were saved in each account and any it skipped.
What carries over
Each row brings its date, amount, payee, category text, currency and notes. Splits don't arrive as splits. See the full list of what doesn't move.
Good to know
- Your AI does the reading. Pennyweight has no Simplifi importer. It can read a CSV uploaded straight to it, but that route puts the whole file into one account, and it converts dates not written as YYYY-MM-DD only when your AI names their order. When your AI reads the export, it splits the rows by account and converts the dates itself.
- Check the signs. Pennyweight stores money out as negative and money in as positive. On a card, a charge is negative and a payment is positive. The balance in the preview shows whether your AI got the direction right.
- Categories come over unless a rule matches. Each row keeps its Simplifi category as a single label. Your active Pennyweight rules run when the import is saved, and a matching rule's category replaces the one from the file. The preview shows how many rows your rules would change. To keep every Simplifi category as it is, ask your AI to import with rules turned off. Your AI can also map categories onto the names you want before saving.
- Transfers appear in both accounts. A card payment from checking shows up on both sides. Import each side into its own account, then ask your AI to find the pairs and link them. See link transfers.
- Your Simplifi rules don't move. Ask your AI to recreate the ones you rely on. Rules you add after the import change rows already saved only when your AI applies them. See rebuild your rules after moving.
