Can't connect your bank
On this page
You asked your AI to connect your bank, but the Connect your bank page stopped you, or the link no longer seems to work. Each block has a specific message and a short fix. For the normal flow, see connect a US bank or card.
What you'll see
- Two-factor authentication required, with a Set up two-factor button. Pennyweight's server answered
MFA_REQUIRED: your account has no second factor yet. - "Connecting a bank is paused while your plan is expired." with a Choose a plan button.
- Something went wrong, with a message and a Try again button. The message is often Plaid's own reason, or "The bank connection didn't complete" followed by Plaid's error code.
- On a computer: "You already have this bank connected. Go to Settings → Accounts and use Reconnect on it to refresh the link — no need to add it again."
- "Plaid SDK didn't load. Refresh and try again."
- A sign-in page instead of the Connect your bank page.
Why it happens
- Two-factor is off. Pennyweight won't connect a bank without a verified second factor. The server checks this on every connection, so it can't be skipped from the browser.
- Your plan has ended. Connecting a bank is paused until you reactivate. Everything you already added stays viewable and exportable.
- Your bank is outside the US. Bank linking works for US banks and cards only.
- Plaid stopped the connection. The bank or Plaid ended the sign-in with an error. If you close Plaid yourself, the page goes back to the Connect with Plaid button with no error.
- The bank is already connected in this ledger. Pennyweight won't add a second connection for the same bank there.
- You aren't signed in. The web app asks you to sign in before it opens any page under
/app.
How to fix it
- Ask your AI for a fresh link. Your AI treats each link as good for about 30 minutes, so start from a new one.
- Turn on two-factor. Select Set up two-factor, or go to Settings → Security. See turn on two-factor authentication. Then open the link again.
- Reactivate your plan if you see the paused card. Select Choose a plan.
- Select Try again on the Something went wrong card. The page starts a new Plaid session. On a computer, select Connect with Plaid again.
- For an already connected bank, go to Settings → Accounts and refresh the existing connection from its menu instead of adding it again.
- Outside the US, use the Outside the US? Add manually link on the page. It opens a guide to importing without a bank feed. You can also add a manual account and import statements.
The bank link you gave me earlier isn't working. Can you give me a new one?
I can't connect my bank. What's wrong?
What you'll see from your AI
Your AI replies with a new link to the Connect your bank page and a note to finish there. It can't complete the connection inside the chat, and it doesn't see the page in your browser. If the page shows a message, tell your AI what it says.
Good to know
- Just turned on two-factor and still blocked? Pennyweight can remember the last check for up to a minute. Wait a minute, then open the link again.
- On a phone, the page sends you to Plaid's own page, which lasts 30 minutes. If it lapses, open the bank link again. See connect a bank from your phone.
- On a phone, there is no already-connected warning. Connecting a bank that is already connected in the same ledger ends on Connected. Check Settings → Accounts first.
- A bank that was connected and stopped syncing is a different problem. See connection health.
