Choose the currency for totals across ledgers
On this page
When your ledgers or accounts hold more than one currency, totals that combine them, such as your net worth, are converted into one currency. That currency is your display currency. This page shows how to check it and change it. If you're still setting up, read choosing your base and ledger currencies first.
What the display currency changes
Your display currency is used for totals that span your ledgers:
- your net worth;
- your total cash across all your accounts;
- cash flow for all your ledgers combined;
- spending across several ledgers you name.
When the currencies differ, each of these keeps its per-currency figures and adds one figure converted into your display currency, with the date of the exchange rate used. See accounts and totals in more than one currency.
It doesn't change anything stored. Every amount keeps the currency it was recorded in, and each ledger keeps its own currency. A report for a single ledger uses that ledger's currency, and a budget's limit stays in its ledger's currency.
By default, your display currency is your workspace currency, the base currency you picked at setup. Unlike your base currency, you can change it at any time.
How to do it
In the web app:
- Open Settings → Ledgers.
- In the Display currency card, pick a currency under Currency.
- Select Save.
- To go back to the default later, select Workspace currency (default). The button also shows your workspace currency code, such as (USD).
Or ask your AI:
- Ask which currency it uses when it adds up your ledgers.
- Ask it to switch to another currency, such as euros. It can set your display currency for you.
- Ask for your net worth to see the new currency in use.
What currency do you use when you add up all my ledgers together?
Show totals that combine my ledgers in euros from now on, then tell me my net worth.
What you'll see
In Settings, Saved. appears inside the card, below the buttons. If the save fails, you see Couldn't save. Try again.
For the first prompt, your AI names your display currency and says whether you chose it or it's your workspace currency by default.
For the second prompt, your AI confirms your display currency is now euros. It then gives your net worth as one euro figure, with the date of the exchange rate it used, next to your balances in each currency.
Good to know
- Rates are daily reference rates. Pennyweight uses the European Central Bank's daily rates. Your bank or card may have used a slightly different rate.
- No recent rate, no combined figure. If a currency has no rate from the past 7 days, the converted figure is left out and your AI is told which currency had no rate. The per-currency figures are still there. Pennyweight never guesses a rate.
- Real currency codes only. Your AI's request is refused when the code isn't an active ISO currency code, such as USD, EUR or JPY.
- One setting for your whole account. The display currency isn't set per ledger.
- Demo ledgers stay out. Net worth, total cash and cash flow for all ledgers leave demo ledgers out. When a demo ledger is your active ledger, they cover only that demo. Spending across ledgers you name covers just those ledgers, and a demo ledger can't be one of several.
- Stored readable. Pennyweight keeps the code you chose unencrypted, outside your encrypted AI profile. It holds no amounts. See what Pennyweight can and can't see.
