Try Pennyweight with a demo ledger
On this page
A demo ledger fills Pennyweight with a year of fictional transactions, so you can see what your AI does before you add your own money. It's free and stays out of your real totals. If you haven't set up your account yet, start with create your account and passphrase.
How to do it
- During setup, the last step asks "How do you want to start?". Choose Explore with demo personal data or Explore with demo business data. Use my own data skips the demo.
- Later, open Settings → Ledgers in the web app, select Create a demo ledger, and pick Personal or Business. When a ledger has no transactions yet, its Transactions page also offers Try with demo data.
- Wait a few seconds while Pennyweight builds the demo.
- Ask your AI to switch to the demo ledger, then ask it anything. See choose which ledger your AI works in.
Are any of my ledgers demo ledgers with sample data?
Set me up with a demo ledger full of sample data so I can try things out.
What's in a demo
- Personal: "A fictional year: a salaried job, a side gig and everyday spending."
- Business: "A fictional year for a one-person consulting LLC with clients and contractors."
Each demo holds 12 months of fictional data ending on the day you create it: accounts, transactions, at least one budget, an alert, recurring charges, rules and notes. The personal demo also has investment holdings.
Each demo also has a few planted problems for your AI to find. The personal demo has a duplicate grocery charge and a refund booked as income. The business demo has a personal purchase on the business card and a card payment booked as income.
The demo is named "Demo · Personal" or "Demo · Business", with a Demo tag in the ledger switcher and in the Settings ledger list. While you view it, a Demo data strip runs across the top of the web app, and the Transactions page shows a Try asking your AI card with questions to copy, such as "Which subscriptions could I cancel?".
What you'll see
For the first prompt, your AI lists your ledgers and says which ones, if any, are demo ledgers.
For the second, your AI can't do it: it has no way to create a demo ledger. Create one yourself in the web app, under Settings → Ledgers.
Once your AI works in a demo, it tells you the figures are fictional. If your own default ledger has no accounts yet and a demo is ready, your AI says so when it connects and answers from the demo.
Good to know
- It's free, also after your trial. A demo ledger is never billed and never turns read-only. Billing lists it as "Demo · free".
- You can change it. You and your AI can edit a demo like any other ledger. A reset throws those changes away.
- It stays out of your real totals. Net worth and lists across all your ledgers leave demo ledgers out. So does an export of all your transactions, unless you ask for the demos too. While your AI works in a demo, net worth and exports cover only that demo. A full-account backup never includes a demo, so a restore doesn't bring one back.
- Transfers stay apart. A demo transaction is never paired as a transfer with one in your own ledgers, either automatically or when your AI links them. See how transfers work.
- One of each. You can have one personal demo and one business demo at a time.
- Your AI can switch to a demo only once it has finished loading.
- Reset it from the demo's page in Settings → Ledgers with Reset to fresh demo data. This replaces the demo with fresh data dated to today and doesn't touch your own ledgers. After you create or reset a demo, wait a minute before you reset it again. You can create or reset demos up to 20 times a day (UTC). If a demo didn't finish loading, select Retry or reset it.
- Delete it in one step. Select Delete demo on its Settings page or in the Demo data strip. There's no name to type. You can't delete a demo while it's still loading, and your AI can't delete ledgers. See delete a ledger.
