Delete a ledger
On this page
Deleting a ledger removes it and everything in it for good. You do it in the web app; your AI can't delete ledgers. For how ledgers fit into your account, see workspaces and ledgers. To make a new one, see create a ledger.
Before you start
- Keep a copy if you want one. Ask your AI to export the ledger's transactions first. See export your data.
- Check for bank connections. A ledger with a live bank connection can't be deleted until you disconnect it. See "Good to know" below.
How to do it
- In the web app, open Settings → Ledgers and select the ledger you want to delete.
- Under Danger zone, type the ledger's name exactly as shown. Capital letters must match.
- Select Delete ledger. The button stays off until the name matches.
To back out, select Cancel or All ledgers.
What gets deleted
Everything that belongs to the ledger goes:
- its accounts and their transactions, including deleted transactions you could still have restored;
- its rules and the notes your AI keeps about the ledger;
- its budgets and alerts;
- its import history and its activity log.
If the ledger has its own subscription, the subscription is canceled right away. The unused part of the period you've paid for is refunded, prorated, for monthly and yearly plans. See change or cancel your subscription.
What you'll see
After you select Delete ledger, the page says "Deleting this ledger and everything in it. This can take a minute." When it's done, the page reloads and the ledger is gone from the list and from the ledger switcher. If the web app was showing that ledger, it switches to your default ledger.
If the delete stops partway, the page says "The delete didn't finish. Retry to complete it." Select Retry delete to finish it. If it stopped because of a bank connection, the page shows that bank message from "Good to know" below instead.
Good to know
- Your default ledger can't be deleted. It shows a lock note instead of a danger zone: it's where transactions land when no other ledger is chosen.
- Deleting can't be undone. There's no restore for a deleted ledger.
- A live bank connection blocks the delete. Pennyweight refuses with "This ledger still has a live bank connection. Disconnect it in Settings → Accounts, then delete the ledger." The button stays Delete ledger. See disconnect a bank vs delete an account.
- A bank still being removed can block it too. When you disconnect a bank, Pennyweight asks Plaid, our banking provider, to remove the connection. A disconnected bank blocks the delete only while Pennyweight can still finish that removal. Otherwise it's deleted along with the ledger. Each delete tries the removal again itself, and a connection Plaid reports as already gone counts as removed. If the removal still isn't done, Pennyweight refuses with "A bank connection on this ledger is still being removed. Try deleting the ledger again in a few minutes. If this keeps happening, email support@pennyweight.ai." The button then reads Retry delete.
- A read-only ledger can still be deleted. A ledger without a subscription after your trial is read-only, and deleting the whole ledger still works.
- A demo ledger is deleted in one step. Its page shows Delete demo instead of a danger zone, with no name to type.
- Your AI isn't moved off the ledger. If your AI was working in the deleted ledger, it reads your default ledger and refuses changes until you ask it to switch. See choose which ledger your AI works in.
