Undo a wrong transfer match
On this page
Two transactions are linked as one transfer, but they aren't the same movement of money. Because of the link, both are left out of your spending. Ask your AI to unlink them, then check each one's category so it counts the way it should.
What you'll see
- A purchase, payment or deposit is missing from your spending or cash flow totals.
- When your AI looks at the transaction, it shows a link to another transaction on a different account, often with the same amount and a nearby date.
Why it happens
- Automatic pairing picked the wrong partner. When your AI gives a transaction the category
Transfer, Pennyweight looks for the other side on another account and links the two when exactly one transaction fits. Two unrelated transactions of the same size can fit. See link the two sides of a transfer for the full match rule. - Someone linked the wrong pair by hand. A link made on request isn't checked for matching amounts or dates.
How to fix it
- Ask your AI to show the transaction and what it's linked to.
- Ask your AI to unlink it. You only need to name one side; Pennyweight finds the other from the link and clears both.
- Check the categories. If a side is still categorized
Transfer,TRANSFER_INorTRANSFER_OUT, it stays out of spending. Ask your AI to give it the category it should have. - If the transaction belongs with a different partner, ask your AI to link the right pair.
The most recent linked transfer between Everyday Checking and Rainy Day Savings was matched by mistake. Unlink it.
Is my $500 Transfer to Rainy Day Savings from the 20th of last month linked to anything?
Unlink the $500 Transfer to Rainy Day Savings from the 20th of last month, then categorize that Everyday Checking transaction as Savings so it counts in my spending.
What your AI tells you
After an unlink, your AI confirms both sides are unpaired. Unlinking doesn't change any category, so your AI may point out that a side still categorized as a transfer stays out of spending, and offer to change it. Your account balances don't change. A link never moved money, so removing one doesn't either.
If the transaction isn't linked, your AI is told it "is not linked to anything, so there is nothing to unlink." If it's still missing from spending, its category is the cause. Ask your AI to change it, as in recategorize a transaction.
If only one side carried the link, for example because the other side was deleted, your AI is told "only one leg carried this link". The side that was cleared is correct.
Relinking the right pair
A transfer link needs two different accounts and amounts moving in opposite directions. Otherwise Pennyweight refuses with INVALID_TRANSFER_PAIR, and your AI sees one of these messages:
- "txns are on the same account; a transfer moves money between two accounts."
- "signs must oppose for transfer / reimbursement (money leaves one account and enters the other)."
Each message goes on to name the kind of link that fits instead. A purchase and its refund are matched as a refund: see match a refund to its purchase. The same purchase recorded twice is in a purchase shows twice.
If either transaction is already linked to something else, Pennyweight refuses the new link and tells your AI to unlink it first.
Good to know
- Unlinking needs a reason. Your AI records why it removed the link, and the change appears in your audit trail.
- There's no preview step. The unlink happens as soon as your AI makes the request.
- A transfer category can pair the transaction again. If a side keeps a transfer category, a later change your AI makes to it runs the automatic pairing again, and the same wrong partner can be linked back. Change the category first if the transaction isn't a transfer.
- Only the exact categories
Transfer,TRANSFER_INandTRANSFER_OUTcount as transfers. Transfers aren't spending explains the rule.
