Delete a transaction and restore it within 30 days
On this page
When a transaction shouldn't be in Pennyweight, such as a charge entered by mistake or a second copy of one already recorded, your AI can delete it. The delete takes effect at once, and you have 30 days to bring the transaction back.
How to do it
- Tell your AI which transaction to delete. Name the merchant, amount, date or account so it finds the right one. See ask about any transaction.
- Give a reason. Pennyweight requires one for every delete and records it in your audit trail.
- Your AI deletes the transaction. Pennyweight has no preview step for a single delete, so if you're not sure which transaction matches, ask your AI to show it first.
Delete the $142.67 Big Basket Superstore charge on my Rewards Card from last month. It shouldn't be there.
Bringing a transaction back
- Ask your AI to restore the transaction within 30 days of the delete.
- Your AI needs the transaction's id and a reason. In the same conversation it already has the id from the delete. Later, it can find the id in your audit trail, where each single delete is logged with the transaction's id and the reason given.
- The transaction returns exactly as it was, with the same amount, category and notes, and the account's balance is recalculated.
Delete the $4.75 Daily Grind Coffee charge from the 3rd of last month in Everyday Checking, then bring it back.
Delete the $500 Transfer to Rainy Day Savings from the 20th of last month in Everyday Checking, then restore it. Is it still linked to the savings side?
What you'll see
After a delete, your AI confirms the transaction is gone and tells you it can be restored for 30 days. After a restore, it confirms the transaction is back. If the transaction was one side of a linked transfer, your AI also says its link was removed.
What a delete changes
- The transaction disappears at once from searches, balances and reports, and the account's balance is recalculated.
- After 30 days it's removed permanently. A restore after that finds nothing to bring back.
- A linked transfer loses its link. If the transaction was one side of a linked transfer, the other side is unlinked. That side counts in spending again, unless its category is a transfer category.
- Your bank can't bring it back. If your bank sends a deleted transaction again while it can still be restored, Pennyweight keeps it deleted.
Good to know
- One transaction at a time. Delete and restore each act on a single transaction per step. To remove a whole import, see undo an import.
- Deleted transactions don't show in searches. There is no list of deleted transactions. Ask your AI to look up recent deletes in your audit trail for a date range.
- Restoring one side of a transfer. Deleting one side of a linked transfer already unlinked the other side, so the restore removes the restored transaction's link too, and your AI is told so. The transaction then counts in spending again, unless its category is a transfer category. If the two belong together, ask your AI to link them again.
- Choosing which copy to delete? See find and fix duplicates.
- An expired plan blocks both. With an expired plan, your AI can't delete or restore transactions.
