Why you can't edit a bank transaction's amount
On this page
You ask your AI to change the amount or date of a charge from your connected bank, and it says it can't. Transactions from your bank are locked to your bank's record. Other fixes, such as a split, a new category or a link, still work.
What you'll see
Your AI tries the change and Pennyweight refuses it with this message:
amount/date/currency can only be edited on manually-entered transactions; this row came from a connected bank feed
The error code is INVALID_ARGUMENT. Along with it, Pennyweight tells your AI to suggest disputing the charge with your bank, or a split, a category change or a link instead. Nothing on the transaction changes.
Why it happens
- Bank transactions mirror your bank's record. The amount, date and currency come from your bank. Pennyweight's message to your AI says the next sync would overwrite a change.
- Only transactions you added or imported can be corrected. Pennyweight doesn't sync them with a bank. To fix one, see correct a manual entry.
Your AI can tell which kind a transaction is: transactions from your bank show their source as plaid. To find the charge first, see ask about any transaction.
How to fix it
Pick the fix that matches what's wrong.
- Your bank's amount or date is wrong. Dispute it with your bank. If your bank revises the transaction, Pennyweight takes the new amount and date and keeps your category and notes.
- Only part of the charge belongs in a category. Ask your AI to split it. The pieces must add up to the bank's amount, and each piece gets its own category. See split one charge across categories.
- It's in the wrong category. Ask your AI to change it. See change a transaction's category.
- Some of it came back as a refund. Ask your AI to match the refund to the purchase. See match a refund to its purchase.
- It's money moving between your own accounts. Ask your AI to link the two sides as a transfer. See link the two sides of a transfer.

What you'll see from your AI
Your AI explains that the amount or date of a bank transaction can't be changed in Pennyweight. It suggests a dispute with your bank, or one of the fixes above.
Good to know
- Other details stay editable. On a bank transaction your AI can still change the category, tags, notes and merchant name.
- Pending charges can change. Your bank can report a different amount when a pending charge settles, for example after a tip. The settled version replaces the pending one and keeps your category and notes. Splits and transfer links are dropped when the amount changed. See how and when bank transactions arrive.
- A split doesn't change the total. If only part of a shared charge was yours and someone owes you the rest, see track money you lent or borrowed.
