See your accounts and balances
On this page
Ask your AI how much cash you have, or for every account and its balance, and you get the answer from Pennyweight in one step. This page shows what to ask and how to read the reply. If your AI isn't connected yet, start with connect your AI.
How to do it
- Ask your AI for your accounts and balances. It lists each account with its type, its balance and its currency.
- Ask how much cash you have. Your AI adds up your checking, savings and cash accounts.
- Ask about one account by name, such as "What's the balance on my savings?"
- To look at one ledger only, name it in your question. Otherwise your AI covers every ledger in your workspace except demo ledgers.

What you'll see
For your accounts, your AI lists each one with its balance. Money you hold in checking, savings and cash shows as a positive balance. A credit card or a loan shows a negative balance, which is the amount you owe. A person you lent money to shows a positive balance: that's what they owe you.
For your cash, your AI gives one total when all your cash accounts use the same currency. If one of them is in euros, you get a dollar figure and a separate euro figure. When the answer covers all your ledgers, Pennyweight also converts those figures into one total in your display currency, at the latest daily exchange rate, and gives the rate's date. If no rate from the last 7 days is available, you get the per-currency figures only.
In the web app, the Accounts list in the sidebar shows each account's balance in its own currency. People you lent to or borrowed from appear in their own group, labeled with who owes whom. When you have more than one account, a Total line adds up the balances in one currency, including cards, loans and people, and notes how many accounts in other currencies it left out.
Good to know
- Negative is owed. Assets are positive and debts are negative. Why a credit card shows a negative balance explains the full rule.
- IOUs aren't cash. A person account's balance comes from the transactions posted to it, and it never counts toward your cash total. See track money you lent or borrowed.
- Converted totals only across ledgers. Each account keeps its balance in its own currency, and Pennyweight never changes it. Only a total that spans your ledgers is converted. Ask about one ledger and its totals stay one per currency. Your display currency is your workspace currency unless you choose another in Settings → Ledgers, or ask your AI to change it. See choose the currency for totals across ledgers and accounts and totals in more than one currency.
- Demo ledgers stay apart. A list across your ledgers leaves out demo ledgers. While a demo ledger is the one you're working in, your AI sees only its accounts. See try Pennyweight with a demo ledger.
- Manual accounts. A manual account's balance is its opening balance plus all of its transactions.
- Linked accounts. An account linked to a US bank shows the balance your bank reports. Pennyweight asks the bank for a fresh balance when new bank data syncs. If that request fails, the account keeps the last balance it received. Your AI can also tell you when each linked account last synced. See how bank sync works.
- Hidden accounts still count. An account hidden from the sidebar still counts in your totals.
- Net worth. To add everything you own and owe into one figure, see check your net worth.
