Ask about any transaction
On this page
You can ask your AI about any transaction in plain words: what you spent somewhere, everything above an amount, or one charge in full detail. Pennyweight searches your transactions and hands the matches to your AI, which answers you. If your AI isn't connected yet, start with connect your AI.
How to do it
- Ask your AI a question about your transactions. You can narrow by date, merchant, amount, category, tag or account, and combine them.
- Be specific about direction when amounts matter. "Spending over $200" and "deposits over $200" are different searches.
- To see one transaction in full, ask your AI to open it. You get its category history, notes, tags, splits and any linked transfer.
Show me everything over $200 in the last three months, money in or out.
How many grocery transactions did I have last month, and how much did they come to?
Show me the full details of my Bluejay Air charge, including where its category came from.
What you'll see
Your AI lists the matching transactions with their date, merchant, amount and category, newest first unless you ask for oldest first. For a count or a total, it gives you the number. When you ask about one transaction, it shows the full record: the category and where that category came from, plus notes, tags, splits and comments. To understand a category in depth, see why a transaction has its category.
Good to know
- Merchant search matches part of the name, in any case. "corner bakery" finds a charge stored as "SQ *CORNER BAKERY 4471". It searches the name as it's stored on the transaction.
- Category search is exact. "Groceries" and "groceries" are different categories. A list of transactions by category looks at each transaction's main category only, not at split pieces. Counts and totals by category do include split pieces, so the two can differ if you split transactions. See how categories work.
- Tag search takes one tag at a time. Tagging itself is covered in tags and notes.
- Amounts have a sign. Money out is negative and money in is positive. Your AI can also search by size regardless of direction. Amount searches compare face values across currencies, so if you hold more than one currency, say which one you mean. See multiple currencies.
- Searches cover the ledger you're working in. Searching by account covers that account's ledger. To search another ledger, name it. See workspaces and ledgers.
- Results come a page at a time. A page holds 50 transactions unless your AI asks for more, up to 500, and your AI can fetch the next page.
- Counts on large searches are approximate. When matches run past one page, Pennyweight can give an exact count only for searches narrowed by date, account or ledger alone. With other filters the count is a minimum. For an exact count or total, your AI adds up the whole set instead. See reports with your AI.
- Deleted transactions don't appear in searches or in a single-transaction lookup. See delete a transaction and restore it within 30 days.
- You can search by rule. Ask for everything a rule categorized and your AI finds the transactions that rule set the category on. Transactions a rule categorized before Pennyweight started recording which rule set a category aren't found. For those, ask by merchant and category instead. See create a rule.
