Export transactions or the audit log
On this page
Your AI can turn your transactions or your audit log into a file you can open in a spreadsheet or keep. You ask, Pennyweight builds the file, and your AI hands you a download link. You need your AI connected first: see connect your AI.
How to do it
- Ask your AI for an export. Say what you want in it: transactions or the audit log.
- Pick a format. Transactions and the audit log come as CSV or JSON. CSV opens in a spreadsheet.
- Narrow it if you want. A transactions export can be limited to a date range, a ledger, an account, a merchant or a category. With no filter, it covers every ledger in your workspace except demo ledgers, unless you ask for them too. If a demo ledger is the one you have open, it covers only that demo.
- Open the link as soon as your AI shows it. It lasts about 2 minutes.

What you can export
- Transactions. CSV or JSON, filtered or everything.
- The audit log. CSV or JSON. It holds the whole log, not a date range: the workspace log plus every ledger's log, leaving out demo ledgers. If a demo ledger is the one you have open, it holds the workspace log and that demo's log only. To read a few days of it in chat instead, see how your AI's changes are logged.
- Saved knowledge. What your AI has saved about a ledger, as JSON only.
- A full backup. One JSON file with your ledgers, accounts, transactions, rules, budgets, alerts and AI profile. See back up and restore.
What you'll see
Your AI replies with a download link and usually the number of rows in the file. Pennyweight also tells your AI which ledgers and filters the file covers, so you can ask what's in it before you open it. Click the link and your browser saves a file named for the kind of export.
Good to know
- The link expires after about 2 minutes. If the link has stopped working, ask for the export again; each request makes a new file and a new link. See my export link expired.
- The file isn't encrypted. Inside Pennyweight your data is encrypted. The downloaded file is plain text, so store it somewhere you trust.
- Pennyweight keeps its copy for 2 days. The export file is set to be deleted from Pennyweight's storage 2 days after it's made.
- Very large exports stop at 100,000 transactions. If that happens, Pennyweight tells your AI the file was cut short. Export again with a narrower date range.
- Some cells start with an apostrophe. A text cell that begins with =, +, - or @ gets a leading apostrophe so your spreadsheet shows it as text instead of running it as a formula. Amounts stay numbers.
- Exports are logged. Each export adds an entry to your audit log.
- Exports work on a read-only ledger. After your trial, a ledger without its own subscription is read-only, but you can still view and export its data. See this ledger is read-only.
- Reports have their own CSV. Each report in the web app has an Export CSV button for the numbers on screen. See built-in web reports.
