The same charge appears pending and posted
On this page
A charge from your connected bank shows up twice on the same account: once still pending and once posted. Until the pending copy goes, the charge counts twice in your totals. Your AI can find these leftovers and delete the pending copy for you.
What you'll see
- Two transactions on one bank-connected account, with the same amount, a few days apart.
- The merchant names may not match exactly. Banks often add a payment-app prefix or a city to the name when a charge settles.
Why it happens
Your bank reports a card purchase as pending first and sends the settled version later. Pending charges count in your totals. When the settled version arrives, Pennyweight normally replaces the pending row with it. How bank sync works explains that step.
Now and then the pending row stays:
- The bank doesn't say which pending charge was settled. The settled version can arrive without naming the pending one it replaces.
- The bank never withdraws the pending charge. Its notice that a pending charge is gone usually arrives, but not always.
- The sync stopped partway. Pennyweight saves the settled version before it removes the pending one, so an interruption between the two steps leaves both.
How to fix it
- Ask your AI to check for pending charges that already posted. It uses its duplicate check, which reads the pending mark your bank sends. Its regular search results don't show which rows are pending.
- Review each pair. Your AI names the posted transaction to keep and the pending one to delete.
- Tell your AI which pending copies to delete.

What you'll see from your AI
For each leftover, your AI shows both transactions and explains that the bank still marks one as pending while the other has posted. The check advises keeping the posted transaction and deleting the pending one. Nothing changes until you tell your AI to delete.
If none of your accounts is connected to a bank, there is nothing to find. Imported and hand-entered transactions never carry the pending mark.
How pairs are found
- Both transactions came from your bank, on the same account, in the same currency.
- They have the same amount and are both charges or both credits.
- Exactly one is still marked pending.
- They are dated within 3 days of each other.
- The check looks back 60 days unless you ask for a longer period, up to 365 days.
- With the default settings, these pairs are reported even when the merchant names differ.
Good to know
- A deleted transaction can be restored for 30 days. A deleted bank transaction can reappear if your bank sends it again with a different date. If it does, run the check again. See delete and restore a transaction.
- Check your edits before you delete. A category or note you added to the pending copy may not be on the posted one. Ask your AI to add it to the posted copy first.
- A changed amount isn't paired. If a tip changed the final amount, the check doesn't match the two. Ask your AI to show that account's charges for those days, tell it which one is the pending copy, and ask it to delete that one.
- One bank transaction can be saved at two dates. Your AI reports such a pair as needing no action. When both copies are from the last 60 days, a completed bank sync removes the older one.
- The same purchase on two accounts is a different problem. See a purchase shows twice and find and fix duplicate transactions.
- A charge you expected hasn't shown up at all? See recent transactions are missing.
