My investment holdings list is empty
On this page
You ask your AI what's in your brokerage account and it finds no positions. An empty list rarely means the account is empty. It means Pennyweight doesn't have positions for that account yet. This page covers each cause and how to fix it.
What you'll see
Your AI reports no holdings for the account. For a linked brokerage, Pennyweight hands your AI an empty list with this note:
Investment details not enabled for this institution or not yet synced — see get_connection_status.product_options / enable_products_url.
The same answer carries a total value of 0 for that account. That zero is not what the account is worth.
For an account you added yourself, your AI gets an empty list with a different note, and no total value. The last cause below explains it.
Why it happens
- Investment details is off for that bank. Positions come only after you turn on a separate switch for each bank. In the web app, the bank's card in Settings → Accounts shows Investment details set to Off under Details from your bank.
- The data hasn't arrived yet. Holdings usually fill in right after you turn the switch on. If Plaid, our banking provider, is still preparing the data, the switch shows Enabled and holdings appear after a later sync.
- The bank needs reconnecting. While a bank's login needs attention, its switches are disabled and read "Reconnect this bank first".
- Your bank doesn't provide the data. If the bank doesn't offer investment data through Plaid, the switch may not appear. Turning it on can also return "This institution does not provide this data through Plaid." or "No accounts on this connection carry this kind of data."
- You added the account yourself. A manual account, such as a Brokerage (read-only) account, has no bank feed, so Pennyweight has no positions for it. Manual accounts sit under Added manually in Settings → Accounts, with no Details from your bank switches. Your AI is told the account was added by hand, so it has no positions and no switch to turn on. It's also told that the account's value is the balance recorded on it.
How to fix it
- Ask your AI to check your bank connections. For each bank, it can see whether Investment details applies and whether it's on. When it applies but is off, your AI also gets a link to turn it on.
- Open the link, or go to Settings → Accounts in the web app. The link opens the accounts list, so find the bank's card there.
- Under Details from your bank, switch on Investment details. This needs two-factor authentication. See turn on card, investment and recurring details.
- Ask your AI for your holdings again. If the list is still empty, ask again after the bank's next sync.
- If the switch reads "Reconnect this bank first", fix the connection first. See check whether your bank connections are working.
- For a brokerage you added yourself, link it to get its positions. See connect a US bank or card.
Why is my investment holdings list empty?
What do I need to turn on to see my brokerage positions?
Add a read-only brokerage account called Index Fund Brokerage to my Household ledger, worth $15,000. Then tell me why Pennyweight shows no holdings for it.
What your AI tells you
For a linked brokerage, your AI tells you whether Investment details is on for that bank, and gives you the link to turn it on when it's off. For an account you added yourself, it explains that Pennyweight has no positions for a manual account.
Good to know
- The switch is one-way. Once it's on, it reads "Billed monthly by Plaid; removed only by disconnecting the bank". See disconnect a bank vs delete an account.
- It's per bank. Turning it on for one bank doesn't turn it on for another.
- Your plan must be active to turn the switch on.
- Positions are listed through your AI. The web app shows summary figures for the account, not the list of positions.
- Linking is US-only. Bank and brokerage linking works for US institutions only.
- Once your holdings fill in, see view investment holdings and gains to read them.
