Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. Pennyweight is a remote server: you add its address in your AI app's connector settings, then approve the connection in your browser. See Connect your AI.
Which AIs work with Pennyweight?
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok. Desktop and command-line clients also work when their sign-in returns to your own computer; other web-based clients are refused. See Connect another MCP client.
Can my AI move money?
No. The bank connection only reads data, such as accounts, transactions and card, loan or investment details, and Pennyweight has no tool that sends a payment or moves money between accounts. See Your AI can't move money.
Is my financial data private?
Your data is encrypted with a key that comes from your passphrase, and Pennyweight can't reset that passphrase. Your AI gets an opaque token instead of your passphrase or keys, and Pennyweight never sees your bank login. See What Pennyweight can and can't see.
Does my AI see my passphrase?
No. Your AI gets an opaque token, never your passphrase or your encryption keys. See What Pennyweight can and can't see.
Why does connecting my AI ask for my passphrase again?
Each authorization uses your passphrase to unlock your encrypted data for that one connection. Your AI never receives the passphrase itself. See Connect your AI.
Why is two-factor required?
Pennyweight requires two-factor before you connect a bank, change or disconnect a bank connection, or authorize an AI. Nothing else needs it. See Turn on two-factor authentication.
What happens if I turn off two-factor?
Every AI connection is revoked, while your bank connections and data stay as they are. To get AI access back, turn two-factor on again and authorize your AI again. See Manage and revoke AI access.
How long does an AI connection last?
30 days, and the 30 days restart every time your AI uses it. You can revoke a connection at any time in Settings → Connect your AI. See My AI lost access to Pennyweight.
Can I use more than one AI?
Yes. Each authorization creates its own connection, and Settings → Connect your AI lists them all with a separate Revoke for each. See Manage and revoke AI access.
How often do I enter my passphrase on the web?
On a new device, or after you Lock or Sign out. Day to day you sign in with your normal password. See Create your account and passphrase.
I forgot my passphrase. What now?
On the unlock page, choose "Use a recovery code instead", enter the recovery code you saved at setup, and set a new passphrase. If you've lost both the passphrase and the recovery code, your data can't be recovered. See Save your recovery code.
Does resetting my passphrase change my recovery code?
No: your recovery code keeps working after a reset. To replace it, use Regenerate recovery code in Settings → Security, and the old code stops working. See Save your recovery code.
Which banks are supported?
US banks, linked through Plaid. For a bank anywhere else, you add the account manually and have your AI import your statements. See Connect a US bank or card.
Can I use Pennyweight outside the US?
Yes, without a bank link: add a manual account for each bank and have your AI import your statements or exports. Each amount is stored in its own currency. See Use Pennyweight without a bank link.
Can I import from QuickBooks, Xero, YNAB and other apps?
Yes: export a CSV or spreadsheet from your old app, and your AI reads it and imports the rows after you approve a preview. Pennyweight has no built-in importer for any app's format. See Moving to Pennyweight.
How much does it cost?
Settings → Billing shows the current price, in US dollars, before you subscribe. Every ledger has its own subscription at the same price, with no tiers and no fee per bank account, and demo ledgers are free. See Plans and pricing.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. New accounts get a 180-day free trial that starts when you finish setup, and no card is needed to start it. See Plans and pricing.
What happens when my trial or plan ends?
A ledger without its own subscription becomes read-only, and nothing in it is deleted: you can still view and export it, or delete the whole ledger yourself. Adding or changing data in that ledger, including new bank transactions, pauses until you subscribe it, and your other ledgers aren't affected. See What happens when your trial or plan ends.
How do I know when my free trial ends?
Settings → Billing shows "Free until" and the date. If you subscribe with more than about two days of the trial left, those days carry over and your first charge comes when the trial ends. See Plans and pricing.
Are payments refundable?
You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting a paid ledger, or your whole account, ends its subscription early and refunds the unused part of the current period, prorated. See Change or cancel your subscription.
Can I track several businesses?
Yes: one account holds several ledgers, so you can keep one per business and one for home, each with its own accounts and reports. Each ledger has its own subscription at the same price. See Run several businesses in one account.
Can I change a ledger's currency or my base currency?
No: you pick the base currency during setup and each ledger's currency when you create it, and neither can be changed later. You can still add accounts in other currencies. See Choosing your base and ledger currencies.
Does Pennyweight convert currencies?
Only in totals that combine ledgers. Each amount is stored in its own currency and never converted, while totals across ledgers, such as net worth, are converted to your display currency at daily exchange rates. See Accounts and totals in more than one currency.
Will alerts notify me?
Pennyweight checks your alerts whenever new data comes in, not in real time, and your AI hears about unread alerts when it connects. An email alert also sends a short notice with no amounts or names; ask your AI for the details. See Set up an alert and Why an alert didn't notify you.
Do rules categorize new transactions automatically?
Yes: rules categorize imports when you confirm them, transactions added without a category, and new bank transactions the next time you open the web app or your AI uses Pennyweight, not in real time. A rule never changes a category you set by hand, and a new rule leaves older transactions alone unless you ask your AI to apply it. See Create a rule and Apply your rules to transactions you already have.
Can I attach receipts?
No: Pennyweight doesn't store receipt files. Your AI can read a statement or screenshot in your chat and record the transactions, and only the transactions are saved. See Import a PDF or screenshot statement.
Can I see what my AI changed?
Yes: most changes your AI makes are written to an audit log, usually with the reason it gave. Ask your AI for the full history, or open AI activity in the web app for recent changes to transactions. See How your AI's changes are logged.
Are my AI's questions logged?
No. Searches, reports and balance checks write no audit entry; the log records changes. See How your AI's changes are logged.
Can I edit transactions on the web?
No: transactions and categories are view-only on the web; to change a transaction, ask your AI. The web app is where you create your account, connect a bank and your AI, and manage billing and security. See How Pennyweight works.
Can I export my data?
Yes: your AI can export transactions or the audit log as CSV or JSON, or make a full backup, and each web report has an Export CSV button. Exports still work after your plan ends. See Export transactions or the audit log.
Why did my export download link stop working?
Export links last about 2 minutes. Ask your AI for the export again: each request makes a new file and a new link. See My export download link expired.
How do I delete my account?
In the web app, go to Settings → Profile and use Delete account: type DELETE, confirm it's you if asked, and Pennyweight signs you out. You can also email privacy@pennyweight.ai. A deleted account's data is kept for 30 days, when support can still restore it, and then permanently removed. See Delete your account.
Do changes show up on the web without reloading?
Yes. The web app keeps a live connection to Pennyweight, and open pages such as Transactions, Reports, Categories and AI activity reload their data when your AI changes something. See Use the built-in web reports.
Is a bug report private?
You see the exact text first, and your AI sends it only after you approve. Pennyweight removes card and account numbers, dollar amounts, email addresses, phone numbers and its own ids and leaves off your user id, but it doesn't catch names of people or merchants. See Report a problem or request a feature.
Does Pennyweight do taxes?
Tax isn't covered in this help center. See How Pennyweight works.
