Delete your account
On this page
Deleting your account cuts off access to your Pennyweight data and, after 30 days, permanently removes it. You delete it yourself in the web app, under Settings → Profile.
Before you delete
- Export what you want to keep. Ask your AI for an export or a full backup. See export your data and back up and restore. Download the file right away, because the link lasts about 2 minutes. Exports work even if your trial or plan has ended. Once the account is deleted, nothing can be exported.
- Disconnect your banks. Deleting your account removes your bank connections too, but some older connections can't be removed that way and stay connected at Plaid. Disconnecting them yourself first is more reliable. In the web app, go to Settings → Accounts, open each bank's ⋯ menu and choose Disconnect — keep history. Disconnecting needs two-factor authentication turned on. See disconnect a bank vs delete an account.
How to do it
- In the web app, go to Settings → Profile. The Delete account card says: "This deletes your books and signs you out. We keep the data for 30 days in case you change your mind, then remove it for good."
- Type DELETE in capital letters in the box, then select Delete account.
- If you last confirmed your sign-in more than 10 minutes ago, you're asked to confirm it's you. With two-factor authentication on, both your sign-in and your two-factor check must be from the last 10 minutes. Pennyweight then deletes the account and signs you out.
- You don't need to cancel your subscriptions separately. Deleting the account cancels every ledger's subscription.
If you'd rather ask by email, write to privacy@pennyweight.ai. Pennyweight's privacy policy and contact page list this address for deletion requests.
What happens when the account is deleted
- Your subscriptions are cancelled. Pennyweight records that they must end, and its daily cleanup job cancels every ledger's subscription on its next run. It doesn't wait for the end of the billing period, and it refunds the unused part of the current paid period, prorated. If a cancellation fails, the job tries again the next day. For billing questions, see manage your subscription.
- Most bank connections are removed. Pennyweight asks Plaid to remove each bank connection it still holds a server-side login for. If a removal fails, the daily cleanup tries again. Some older connections have no server-side login, and they stay connected at Plaid.
- Your AI loses access. Pennyweight revokes the connections your AI apps use. See manage and revoke AI access.
- Every request is refused. The web app and your AI both get an "account deleted" answer instead of your data.
- Your data is kept for 30 days. It isn't erased at once. After 30 days, a daily cleanup permanently removes it.
What you'll see
Once the account is deleted, the card says "Your account is deleted. Signing you out…" Pennyweight then signs you out and you land on the sign-in page.
If you close the check that confirms it's you, or it doesn't go through, the card says "Please confirm it's you, then try again." If the delete fails for another reason, it says "Your account couldn't be deleted. Try again." In both cases you can select Delete account again.
If the web app is still open in another tab or on another device, its pages may be replaced by a screen headed This account was deleted. It reads: "Your data is retained for 30 days after deletion, then permanently erased. Within that window we can still restore it — contact support if this was a mistake." The only button is Sign out.
If an AI you connected still reaches Pennyweight, it gets an ACCOUNT_DELETED error with this message: "This Pennyweight account was deleted. Its data is retained for 30 days — contact support within that window to restore it; after that it is permanently removed." Reconnecting the AI won't help. This is a different error from the one in my AI lost access.
Good to know
- Changed your mind? Contact support within the 30 days and Pennyweight can restore your account and data. The deleted-account screen links to hello@pennyweight.ai.
- A restore doesn't bring back what was already cancelled or removed. You'd subscribe again, and reconnect any bank whose connection was removed.
- After 30 days, deletion is permanent. Support can't restore the account after that.
- Disconnecting a bank is not deleting your account. To stop one bank syncing or remove its accounts, use disconnect a bank vs delete an account. For what Pennyweight stores while your account is open, see what Pennyweight can see.
