Your payment didn't go through
On this page
If a renewal payment fails, that ledger's subscription becomes past due. While it's past due, the ledger stays fully usable. Update your card in the web app to keep it that way. Nothing is deleted at any point.
To change your plan or payment details in general, see change or cancel your subscription.
How to do it
- Open the web app and go to Settings → Billing. Your AI can give you a link: ask it to take you to billing. See jump to the right web page from your AI.
- Find the notice headed by your ledger's name and select its Manage subscription. This opens Stripe's billing portal.
- Update your card there, as the notice asks.
Changing billing happens only in the web app. Your AI can link you to Billing, but it can't change your payment details.
What you'll see
- In Settings → Billing. Each ledger whose last payment failed gets its own notice, headed by that ledger's name: "The last payment for this ledger's subscription didn't go through. Update your card in Manage subscription to keep it active." Under Billing by ledger, that ledger's row reads "Last payment failed". If it's your default ledger, its plan card still shows Active.
- By email. Pennyweight's failed-payment email has the subject "Pennyweight couldn't process your payment". It reads: "We couldn't charge your card for your Pennyweight subscription. Update your payment method in Settings > Billing. We'll retry automatically over the next few days. Your data is safe and stays accessible either way."
- If your bank asks you to confirm the payment. Some banks require a one-time verification step before a charge goes through. For this case, Pennyweight's email has the subject "Confirm your Pennyweight payment". The email asks you to open Settings > Billing to complete it, and says: "Until you do, the payment stays pending."
Emails go to your account's primary email address. They say nothing about your ledgers or transactions, so they don't say which ledger a payment was for. The notices in Billing do.
Once a payment succeeds, Pennyweight records it and the notice goes away.
Good to know
- More than one ledger. Each ledger has its own subscription. If payments failed on several ledgers, Billing shows a notice for each one, each with its own Manage subscription button. How billing works across ledgers is in billing when you have more than one ledger.
- Your AI keeps working while a subscription is past due. A past-due subscription counts as active, so your AI can still add and change data in that ledger, and its banks keep syncing.
- When it becomes read-only. If the payment keeps failing and the subscription ends or is marked unpaid, that ledger becomes read-only. Your other ledgers aren't affected. You can still view and export everything. See this ledger is read-only and what happens when your plan ends.
- The terms cover retries. Pennyweight's terms state: "If a payment fails, we may retry it and may suspend paid features until the balance is settled."
- Coming back after it lapses. You can subscribe the ledger again from Billing by ledger after its plan has ended, unless a payment dispute on it is still open.
- Prices. For what each plan costs, see plans and pricing.
