Disconnect a bank vs delete an account
On this page
When you're done with a bank, you have two choices. Disconnect it to stop syncing and keep the history you already have, or delete its accounts to erase them and their transactions. Both happen in the Pennyweight web app, in Settings under Accounts. Your AI can't disconnect a bank or delete an account for you.
If you haven't connected a bank yet, see connect a US bank or card. Deleting your whole Pennyweight account is a separate card in Settings → Profile. See delete your account.
Disconnect a bank and keep its history
- In the web app, go to Settings → Accounts.
- On the bank's card, open the ⋯ menu (Connection actions).
- Choose Disconnect — keep history, then confirm.
Disconnecting needs two-factor authentication turned on. If your data is locked, the app asks you to unlock it first.
After you disconnect:
- Syncing stops, and Pennyweight removes its Plaid login for that bank.
- The accounts and their transactions stay. You can still view and export them. See export your data.
- Balances freeze at the last sync.
- The bank moves to a Disconnected banks section below your other banks, marked as frozen.
Delete a bank's accounts and their data
- In Settings → Accounts, open the bank's ⋯ menu.
- Choose Delete — remove accounts & data.
- Read the warning, then choose Delete accounts to confirm.
This removes every account on that bank and every transaction tied to them. When the last account is gone, Pennyweight also disconnects the bank. The app warns that this can't be undone and that reports and exports lose this data. A bank in the Disconnected banks section has its own Delete button that does the same thing.
Remove a single account
- In Settings → Accounts, select the account to open its details.
- Under Danger zone, choose Remove account.
- Read the warning, then confirm.
This deletes that one account and all its transactions. The app warns that this can't be undone. Use it for an account you added manually, or for one account at a linked bank. If that bank still has other accounts, it stays connected.
People you lent to or borrowed from show on the People page, not in Settings, and have no remove button there.
Which one to choose
- Disconnect if you no longer want a bank synced but want to keep its history.
- Delete if you want the accounts and their transactions gone from Pennyweight.
- Hide from sidebar if you only want an account out of the way. Open the account and turn it on. The account stays in Settings and in your totals.
Reconnect a bank
- A connected bank: the ⋯ menu's Refresh connection re-authorizes the same connection. It shows Reconnect when the bank needs you to sign in again. Either way, it won't add older history.
- A disconnected bank: its Reconnect button opens the Connect your bank page and starts a new connection, the same flow as connecting a bank for the first time.
The Accounts page notes that to extend your history, you can disconnect and reconnect as a fresh bank, or import statements with your AI. For how a connection keeps itself up to date, see how bank sync works.
Good to know
- Extra bank details turn off only by disconnecting. Once card and loan, investment or recurring details are on for a bank, disconnecting it is the only way to turn them off.
- Deleting a whole ledger removes its accounts too. After you type the ledger's name, everything in it is deleted. A ledger with a live bank connection can't be deleted until you disconnect that bank, and your default ledger can't be deleted. See delete a ledger.
- A read-only ledger keeps its accounts. After your trial, a ledger without its own subscription is read-only. Pennyweight won't delete its accounts one at a time, and Remove account is turned off. Deleting the whole ledger still works. See manage your subscription.
