How Pennyweight works: your AI is the interface
On this page
You use Pennyweight by talking to an AI assistant you already use. Once you connect it, that AI does the work: it finds, organizes and reports on your transactions. The web app is where you set things up and look your data over. See glossary.
Two parts, two jobs
Your AI does the work. Once connected, your AI can search your transactions, change categories, split charges, link transfers, build rules, run cash flow and net worth reports, set budgets, import statements and export your data.
The web app is for setup and reading. At https://app.pennyweight.ai you create your account, connect a bank, connect your AI and manage billing and security. You can browse transactions, categories and built-in reports there. Transactions and categories on the web are view-only. To change a transaction, ask your AI.
How to do it
- Create your account and passphrase. Start here walks through the order.
- Connect your AI to Pennyweight.
- Get your data in. Link a US bank on the web, or ask your AI to import a statement or CSV export.
- Ask your AI what it can do, then ask your first real question.
What can you do with Pennyweight?
How much did I spend at Daily Grind Coffee last month?
Can you pay my electricity bill from my checking account?
What you'll see
For the first prompt, your AI summarizes what it can do. Expect it to cover areas such as finding and categorizing transactions, rules, imports, reports, budgets and exports. It may also list what it can't do.
For a question about your money, your AI looks up the matching transactions and answers with the figures, often with the rows behind them.
For a payment request, your AI tells you it can't move money.
For a guided first session, see Your first conversation with Pennyweight.
Good to know
- Your AI can't move money. Pennyweight's bank connection asks your bank for transactions and, with your consent, card, loan and investment details. It does not request payment or transfer access. See Your AI can't move money.
- Your AI gives a reason for every transaction change. Edits to transactions require a reason, and each one is logged. Review recent changes on the web under AI activity, or ask your AI for the full history. See how your AI's changes are logged.
- Some settings live only on the web. Your passphrase, recovery code, AI access and billing are managed in web Settings. Your AI can give you a link to the right page.
- Bank linking is US-only. Everywhere else, bring your data in as statements or exports. See using Pennyweight anywhere else.
- Rules sort new transactions. Your rules categorize imported rows, transactions your AI adds without a category, and new bank transactions when they're added at your next session, when you open the web app or use your AI. A new rule leaves transactions you already have alone unless you ask your AI to apply it to them. See Apply your rules to transactions you already have.
- Alerts are checked when data lands. Your AI can set an alert for a large charge, a low balance or a budget reaching a set share of its limit. Pennyweight checks alerts when transactions are added or imported, after a bank sync and when your AI connects, not in real time. Your AI can show you which alerts went off, and an email alert also sends a short notice with no amounts or names. See Set up an alert and My alert didn't notify me.
