What you do on the web vs with your AI
On this page
Pennyweight has two surfaces. The web app at https://app.pennyweight.ai is where you set up your account, connect banks and AIs, handle security and billing, and look over your data. Your AI is where you change that data: categories, splits, rules, imports and more. This page lists which side does what. For the big picture, see How Pennyweight works.

Pages you can only read
Transactions, Categories, Knowledge and AI activity show your data but don't change it. A transaction's detail panel says: "To recategorize or edit this transaction, ask your AI — it's what writes to your ledger. This view is read-only." The Knowledge page says the same for what your AI has learned. The People page lets you add a person, and nothing else. The four built-in reports are for viewing and CSV download.
AI activity shows recent AI changes on your latest transactions. For the full history, ask your AI. See Every AI change is logged.

Both sides
You can do these on the web or by asking your AI:
- Create a ledger.
- Add a manual account. The web form stores the balance exactly as you type it, and the account still needs an opening balance before its first import. For a card or loan, ask your AI instead. See Add a manual account.
- Add a person for an IOU.
- Rename or hide an account. For a person's account, only your AI can do it.
- Edit your AI personalization notes. The web page and your AI can keep separate copies. See Your AI profile.
- Set your display currency, the currency for totals that combine ledgers. On the web it's in Settings → Ledgers. See Choose the currency for totals across ledgers and Accounts and totals in more than one currency.
Neither side
- Move money. Neither your AI nor the web app can send, transfer or pay money from your accounts. See Your AI can't move money.
- Rename a ledger. Choose the name with care when you create it.
Good to know
- One workspace to start. Your account starts with one workspace, created when you set up your account. Your AI can't create a workspace. See Workspaces and ledgers.
- Ask your AI for a link. When a task lives on the web, your AI can give you a link to the right page. The link doesn't sign you in.
- Connecting a bank starts in either place, finishes on the web. Your AI can give you a bank connection link. You complete the bank sign-in in your browser.
- The web app updates on its own. When your AI changes something, open web pages refresh without a reload. There's no indicator. If a page looks out of date, reload it.
- A ledger without a subscription is read-only on both sides. After your trial, it stays viewable and exportable and you can still delete it, but it can't take new data from the web or your AI. Your other ledgers aren't affected. See What happens when your trial or plan ends.
- Each side picks its own ledger. The ledger switcher at the top left of the web app doesn't change which ledger your AI works in, and the reverse is also true.
