Your AI can't move money
On this page
Your AI can read your finances and change the records Pennyweight keeps about them. It can't send, transfer or pay money from your accounts. Nothing else in Pennyweight can either, including the web app.

What the bank connection asks for
Pennyweight connects to US banks through Plaid. When you connect a bank, Pennyweight asks Plaid for your transactions. It also asks you to agree to share card and loan details and investment details, but it doesn't fetch them until you turn them on for that bank. Recurring bills and income is the third detail you can turn on. See Turn on card, investment and recurring details.
When you reconnect a bank, Pennyweight asks for no new kinds of data.
Pennyweight doesn't request any Plaid product that moves money. With your bank connection, it only reads your accounts, balances and transactions, the extra details you turned on, and your bank's name, and it can remove the connection. See how bank connections are secured.
What your AI can't do
- Move money. Your AI has no way to make transfers, ACH payments, wires or bill payments.
- Connect a bank for you. It gives you a link to the web app. You finish the bank sign-in in your browser, and the link itself changes nothing.
- Change your billing. It can give you a link to the Billing section of Settings. Plan and payment-method changes happen there.
The web app has no money movement either. It has no screen for sending or paying money from your bank accounts. The only payment anywhere in the app is your own Pennyweight subscription (see below).
Linking a transfer isn't moving money
When your AI links a transfer, it pairs two transactions that already happened. For example, the $500 that left your checking account and the $500 that arrived in savings. The link tells Pennyweight they are one movement, so neither side counts as spending. See transfers aren't spending.
The link is a note in Pennyweight's records. It doesn't move money, and it doesn't change any balance. Categorizing a transaction as Transfer can make Pennyweight link the pair on its own, and that is the same bookkeeping step. See Link the two sides of a transfer, or unlink a wrong transfer.
What your AI can change
Your AI changes records inside Pennyweight. Among them:
- the category of a transaction (recategorize a transaction);
- notes and tags (tags and notes);
- splits (split a transaction);
- transactions you enter by hand, including the amount or date of one you entered (fix a manual entry);
- deletes, which you can restore for 30 days (delete and restore);
- rules (create a rule).
Edits to transactions carry your AI's reason, which you can review later. See the audit trail. The amount and date of a bank-synced transaction stay as your bank reported them. See why you can't edit a bank amount.
How to check it
- Open Settings → Accounts and read the read-only notice in the Accounts section.
- When you connect a bank, read the list on the Connect your bank page before you continue to Plaid.
What you'll see
Settings → Accounts says: "Read-only by design. Pennyweight can look at your transactions but can never move money." The Connect your bank page says: "Read-only access. We can look, never move money."
Good to know
- Your subscription is the one payment. You pay for Pennyweight through Stripe, from Settings → Billing. See plans and pricing.
- If your AI suggests paying a bill in the web app, there's no such feature. Pay through your bank or card issuer.
