Nickname or hide an account
On this page
Give an account a nickname you recognize, or hide one you don't need to see in the sidebar. Both change only how the account is shown. Balances, transactions and totals stay the same. To see your accounts first, check your balances.
How to do it
- Ask your AI to rename the account. Give its current name and the nickname you want.
- To hide an account, ask your AI to hide it from the sidebar. Name the account.
- To undo either change, ask your AI to clear the nickname or to show the account in the sidebar again.
Rename my Rainy Day Savings account to Rainy day fund.
Hide my Car Loan account from the sidebar.
You can also do this in the web app for bank and manual accounts:
- Open Settings and choose Accounts.
- Select the account.
- Next to Name, select Edit, type the nickname and select Save. Saving an empty name goes back to the original name.
- To hide the account, tick Hide from sidebar. Untick it to bring the account back.
What you'll see
For the first prompt, your AI finds Rainy Day Savings, sets the nickname and confirms the account now shows as Rainy day fund. The original name is kept, so you can go back to it.
For the second, your AI confirms that Car Loan is hidden from the sidebar. The loan isn't deleted, and its transactions don't change.
Where the nickname shows
- Nickname shown: the web sidebar, the account's own page in Settings, and the account filter on the Categories page.
- Original name shown: the account list in Settings → Accounts and the net worth report. The People page shows the person's name.
- Your AI: when it lists your accounts, it gets both the original name and the nickname.
Good to know
- Nothing else changes. A nickname or a hidden account never changes balances, transactions or any math.
- Hidden means the sidebar only. A hidden account still counts in your totals and net worth, and its transactions stay as they are. A hidden bank or manual account stays in Settings → Accounts. A hidden IOU still appears on the People page.
- People accounts. Accounts for money you lent or borrowed don't appear in Settings → Accounts, so ask your AI to rename or hide them. In the sidebar, a nickname replaces the "You owe…" or "…owes you" label. See track an IOU.
- Length. A nickname can be up to 120 characters.
- Notes for IOUs. Your AI can also save a short note on an account, such as what a loan to a friend was for. The note shows on that person's card on the People page. Ask your AI to clear it when it no longer applies.
- Every change is logged. Renames and hides your AI makes are recorded in your audit log.
- Hiding isn't removing. To stop a bank syncing or remove an account, see disconnect or delete an account.
