Create a ledger for a business or project
On this page
A ledger keeps one part of your money on its own: a business, a trip or a side project. You can then add accounts to it and ask your AI questions about just that ledger. After your trial, a new ledger needs its own subscription before you can add data to it. For how ledgers fit into your account, see workspaces and ledgers.
How to do it
- Ask your AI to create a ledger. Give it a name and say what it's for.
- Pick a type: personal, business, trip or other.
- Name a currency if the ledger isn't in your workspace currency, for example EUR for a trip to Lisbon. If you don't name one, your AI uses your workspace currency.
- If your trial has ended, subscribe the new ledger. Your AI gives you a link to Billing in the web app. Until you subscribe, the ledger exists but is read-only.
- Ask your AI to switch to the new ledger when you want to work in it. Creating a ledger doesn't switch to it. See choose which ledger your AI works in.
You can also create a ledger in the web app. Open Settings → Ledgers → Add a Ledger, fill in the name, type and currency, then select Create ledger. After your trial, the web app then takes you to Billing to subscribe the new ledger. The web app doesn't switch to the new ledger either. Use the ledger switcher at the top left of the app.
Make a trip ledger for Lisbon in EUR, then switch to it.
Create a business ledger called Acme LLC.
Create a new ledger called Personal.
What you'll see
Your AI confirms the new ledger with its name, type and currency. If you asked it to switch, it also tells you it's now working in the new ledger. The ledger shows up in the web app's ledger list too.
If a ledger with that name already exists, your AI tells you so and nothing is created. It can work in the existing ledger, or you can pick a different name. Every workspace starts with a default ledger named "Personal", so the third prompt is refused.
Good to know
- Each ledger has its own subscription. One trial covers every ledger you create while it runs. After it ends, a new ledger stays read-only until it has a subscription of its own. See billing when you have more than one ledger and plans, pricing and early access.
- The currency is permanent. You can't change a ledger's currency after you create it. Manual accounts you add to the ledger take its currency unless you give them their own. See accounts and totals in more than one currency and choosing your base and ledger currencies.
- Use a real currency code, such as USD, EUR or JPY. Your AI can't create a ledger with a code that isn't a real currency.
- In the web app, the currency picker starts on USD. Change it before you select Create ledger if the ledger uses another currency.
- Names must be unique. A name that matches an existing ledger apart from capitalization or extra spaces is refused. That includes "Personal".
- You can't rename a ledger. Neither your AI nor the web app has a rename option, so choose the name with care.
- Demo ledgers are made in the web app. Your AI can't create one. Use Create a demo ledger under Settings → Ledgers. See try Pennyweight with a demo ledger.
- Deleting a ledger is done in the web app and removes everything in it. See delete a ledger.
