Billing when you have more than one ledger
On this page
Each ledger in Pennyweight has its own subscription. You pay for the ledgers you keep adding to, and you see every ledger's status in one list. Every ledger costs the same; for the prices and the trial, see plans, pricing and early access.
How it works
- One subscription per ledger. Every real ledger has its own subscription at the same price. Demo ledgers are always free.
- One trial covers them all. Your free early-access trial covers every ledger while it runs, including ledgers you add during it.
- After the trial, a ledger without a subscription is read-only. You can still view it, export it or delete the whole ledger. Adding, changing or deleting items in it is paused. Your other ledgers aren't affected. See this ledger is read-only.
How to do it
- Ask your AI which of your ledgers have a subscription. It lists each ledger with its billing status.
- Ask your AI to take you to billing, or open Settings → Billing in the web app.
- Under Billing by ledger, find the ledger and select Subscribe monthly or Subscribe yearly.
- Complete checkout on Stripe's page. Stripe sends you back to Settings → Billing.
- Repeat for each ledger you want to keep adding data to.
Does each of my ledgers need its own subscription? What's the billing status of each one?
Take me to the page where I can subscribe my Studio ledger.
Paying happens only in the web app. Your AI can tell you each ledger's status and give you the link, but it can't start a subscription.
What you'll see
Billing by ledger starts with: "Each ledger has its own subscription. Demo ledgers are free. A ledger without one stays viewable and exportable, and can still be deleted, but can't take new data." Each ledger then shows one status:
- "Free during early access": your trial covers it.
- "Subscribed": it has an active subscription.
- "Last payment failed": it has a subscription, but its last payment didn't go through.
- "Subscription ends", with a date: you cancelled, and it stays active until that date.
- "Days left to subscribe", with a number: it's in its notice period (see below).
- "Read-only · no subscription"
- "Demo · free"
- "Read-only · payment under dispute" or "Canceled after a payment dispute"
A subscribed ledger has Cancel subscription on its row. With more than one non-demo ledger, the plan card below the list is labeled "Default ledger plan". See change or cancel your subscription.
Your AI sees each ledger's billing status. For a read-only ledger, it also gets a link to subscribe that ledger. In the web app, a read-only ledger other than your default one shows "This ledger needs its own subscription" with a Subscribe this ledger button. If your default ledger is read-only, it shows "Your trial has ended" or "This ledger's subscription has ended" with a Choose a plan button.
Good to know
- A ledger you create after the trial starts read-only. Your AI still creates it and gives you the link to subscribe it. See create a ledger.
- If you subscribed before billing became per ledger, your subscription now covers your default ledger. Each of your other ledgers gets a notice of at least 30 days: one email, a "This ledger needs its own subscription soon" notice on that ledger's pages, and a mention from your AI. The ledger keeps working during the notice and turns read-only afterwards unless you subscribe it.
- Refunds and disputes affect one ledger. A full refund or a payment dispute makes only the ledger that payment was for read-only. While a dispute is open, you can't start a new subscription for that ledger. If the charge is upheld, the ledger unlocks on its own.
- Deleting a paid ledger in the web app cancels its subscription right away and refunds the unused part of the current period, prorated. Nothing is refunded during the trial, because nothing was charged. See delete a ledger.
- Payment problems. If a ledger's payment fails, Billing shows a notice headed by that ledger's name, with its own Manage subscription button. See your payment didn't go through.
- What happens when the trial ends is covered in when your trial or plan ends.
