What happens when your trial or plan ends
On this page
When your free early-access trial ends, each ledger needs its own subscription, except demo ledgers, which stay free and never turn read-only. Any other ledger without one becomes read-only. Nothing is deleted: you can still view and export everything in it, and you can delete the whole ledger. Adding or changing data in that ledger, and new bank transactions for it, pause until you subscribe it. Ledgers with a subscription keep working.
New to the plans? See plans, pricing and early access. With several ledgers, see billing when you have more than one ledger.
When it happens
- Your trial ends. One trial covers all your ledgers. When its end date passes, every non-demo ledger without its own subscription becomes read-only. You aren't charged: no card was needed to start the trial.
- You subscribed a ledger during the trial without a payment method. When the trial ends, Stripe pauses that subscription and the ledger becomes read-only.
- You cancel. Cancellation takes effect, and access ends, at the end of the period you already paid for. Cancelling during the trial doesn't end the trial early.
- A payment fails. That alone doesn't make the ledger read-only; it does if the subscription then ends or is marked unpaid. See your payment didn't go through.
- A payment is refunded in full, or disputed with your card issuer. The ledger that payment was for becomes read-only. A partial refund doesn't change access. If a disputed charge is upheld, the ledger unlocks on its own. If the dispute closes with the charge returned, that ledger's subscription is canceled.
If you subscribed before billing became per ledger, your subscription covers your default ledger. Your other ledgers stay usable through a notice of at least 30 days, then turn read-only unless subscribed.
How to keep access
- Open the web app and go to Settings → Billing. Your AI can give you a link: ask it to take you to billing. See jump to the right web page from your AI.
- Under Billing by ledger, select Subscribe monthly or Subscribe yearly for each ledger you want to keep adding to, and complete checkout.
- If you subscribe during the trial, add a payment method before the trial ends.
You can subscribe a ledger again after its plan has ended, except while a payment dispute on that ledger is open. Once the trial is over, billing starts right away. Choosing a plan happens only in the web app; your AI can't start or change a subscription.
What you'll see
- Before it ends. During the trial, the sidebar shows "Early access member" with "Everything is yours, free until" and your end date. Until your default ledger has a subscription, Settings → Billing shows the same date. Billing by ledger lists each of your own ledgers as "Free during early access".
- Trial-ending email. If you subscribed a ledger during the trial, Pennyweight emails you a few days before the trial ends, asking you to add a payment method in Settings → Billing. You get one email, however many ledgers you subscribed. If you never started a subscription, no email is sent.
- After it ends. When your default ledger has no subscription, the sidebar reads "Trial ended" if your trial lapsed, or "Subscription ended" if a paid subscription ended, with "Your data stays viewable and exportable. Choose a plan to resume bank syncs and imports." While you're in a read-only ledger, pages such as Transactions show a notice at the top. Reports shows it only once all your non-demo ledgers are read-only.
- In your AI. Changes your AI tries in a read-only ledger are refused with a message naming the ledger. See this ledger is read-only.
- Refund and dispute emails. A full refund or a new dispute each sends you an email saying the ledger that payment was for is read-only and nothing has been deleted.
Emails go to your primary email address.
What stops and what keeps working
Stops in a read-only ledger:
- every change through your AI: adding, editing, deleting or restoring transactions, imports, rules, budgets and accounts
- new transactions from the banks connected to that ledger, including background syncing
- connecting a new bank to that ledger
Keeps working:
- every question, search and report
- exports and full backups. See export your data.
- your other ledgers, and creating new ones
- deleting the whole ledger in the web app
- bug reports and feature requests
Bank syncing for a ledger resumes after you subscribe it.
Good to know
- Your data stays. Pennyweight's terms state: "Cancelling never deletes your data." After a subscription ends, you keep read access and can export everything.
- No automatic charge at trial end. The terms state that no card is needed to start the trial "and we do not charge you when it ends."
- No grace period at trial end. The check runs on every change, so read-only starts the moment the trial or a ledger's plan ends, and lifts as soon as that ledger has an active subscription. The notice above is the one exception.
- The trial is the time to decide. Deleting a paid ledger, or your whole account, ends its subscription early and refunds the unused part of the current period, prorated. To cancel, see change or cancel your subscription.
