Limits and timeouts
On this page
This page lists the limits Pennyweight enforces, grouped by what you're doing. Most of them only matter for large imports or long histories. Each section links the article that explains the task in full. For what your AI can do in the first place, see what your AI can do.
Importing transactions
- Rows per import: 5,000. One import call takes at most 5,000 rows, and Pennyweight recommends parts of about 250. For a longer file, ask your AI to send it in parts. See import a CSV.
- Direct CSV upload: 5 MiB. When Pennyweight reads a CSV file itself, the file can be at most 5 MiB, and your AI must send the file's contents, not a link. See CSV format reference.
- Request size: 6 MiB. Anything your AI sends to Pennyweight in one request, including an uploaded file or a backup, can be at most 6 MiB.
- Accounts per import plan: 100. When your AI plans a large import across several accounts, one plan can cover up to 100 accounts. The plan splits the rows into parts of up to 250. See import years of history across many accounts.
- Held parts: 300 KB each, 2 days. If your AI app can't save files between steps, your AI can hold prepared rows in Pennyweight. Each part can be up to 300 KB, and parts are set to expire after 2 days. See import a statement from your phone.
- Confirm code: 15 minutes by default, used once. When your AI previews an import or another change, the code that confirms it works once and, by default, expires after 15 minutes. Restoring a backup uses a 60-minute code instead (see below). See preview and confirm.
- Duplicate check. Your AI can look for duplicates over the last 1 to 365 days (60 by default). One check scans up to 2,000 transactions by default and up to 20,000 if your AI asks. If the scan stops at that limit, Pennyweight says so, so an empty result isn't mistaken for "no duplicates". See find and fix duplicates.
If an import fails, see import errors.
Exports and backups
- Download link: 120 seconds. An export link works for about 2 minutes. If it has lapsed, ask your AI for a new one. See export link expired.
- Stored file: 2 days. Pennyweight's copy of an export file is set to be deleted 2 days after it's made.
- Transactions per export: 100,000. A transaction export stops at 100,000 rows and Pennyweight tells your AI the file was cut short. A full-account backup has no row limit. See export your data.
- Restoring a backup: 50,000 records, 40 MB. A backup can be restored only if it holds 50,000 records or fewer. Restored by its reference, which your AI gets when it makes the backup, a backup can be up to 40 MB. A large restore runs in rounds, and it waits up to 60 minutes between rounds; each finished round restarts that clock. See back up and restore.
Edits and undo
- Bulk changes: 500 transactions per request. One bulk change applies to at most 500 matching transactions. Pennyweight doesn't report that more matched, so for a large set, ask your AI to work in smaller slices, such as one date range at a time, and check the count. See recategorize many transactions.
- Automatic transfer pairing: 200 rows. After a bulk change marks transactions as transfers, Pennyweight tries to pair them. If more than 200 rows are transfers, it skips the pairing and says so. Your AI can then link pairs itself. See link transfers.
- Deleted transactions: 30 days. A deleted transaction can be restored for 30 days. After that, a daily cleanup removes it for good. See delete and restore.
- Category reversal check: 90 days. If your AI tries to change the category of a transaction that was last changed within the past 90 days, Pennyweight asks you to confirm first. The 90 days count from the transaction's last change. See reversal confirmation.
- Search and history pages: 500. One search returns up to 500 transactions, and your AI pages for more. The change history returns 50 entries by default and up to 500 per page. See finding transactions and audit trail.
Rules and what your AI remembers
- Rule pattern: 1,000 characters. A rule written as a pattern (a regular expression) can be up to 1,000 characters. A rule's reason can be up to 500. See create a rule.
- Running rules: about 20,000 transactions. Applying or testing rules looks at up to about 20,000 transactions in one go. If there were more, Pennyweight says the result covers only the part it scanned, so narrow the date range or account and run it again. See apply your rules to transactions you already have.
- What your AI remembers: 200 entries per change, about 350 KB per ledger. Your AI can save up to 200 notes in one change. Each ledger's rules and saved notes share one record of about 350 KB. When it's full, Pennyweight refuses new entries and asks your AI to prune old ones. See what your AI remembers.
- Your profile. The profile your AI receives when it connects is capped at 4,000 characters. A longer profile is cut short there, and your AI can read the rest on request. Custom notes are kept to their first 500 characters. See your AI profile.
AI connection and sessions
- AI connection: 30 days from last use. Each request your AI makes extends its access by 30 days. After 30 days without use, you connect it again. See your AI lost access.
- Web app session: 90 days. Your web app session is kept on Pennyweight's servers for 90 days, and each use extends it. See lock vs sign out.
- Requests: 120 per minute per AI connection. Past that, your AI gets a "too many requests" message with the number of seconds to wait. See too many requests.
- Deleted account: 30 days. After an account is deleted, its data is kept for 30 days. Contact support within that window to restore it. After that, a daily cleanup removes it permanently. See delete your account.
Feedback
- Bug reports and feature requests: 10 per hour. Previews count toward the limit. See report a problem.
- Report length: 4,000 characters. A report's description, and each step it lists, can be up to 4,000 characters.
Reports
- Reports: about 100,000 transactions. A report sums at most about 100,000 transactions. If the period holds more, Pennyweight says so. Narrow the date range. See reports from your AI.
- Founder dashboard: 1 to 24 months back. See founder dashboard.
